CALLIGRAPHY
My calligraphy pieces are a labour of love, carefully balanced to combine beautiful design with meaningful words and symbols. I write in both Kana and Kanji and look to bridge the gap in understanding various cultures.

An Offering to Gods
2023
This time around
I couldn't even bring the sacred streamers
Offering Hill
But if this brocade of leaves
Is to the Gods liking....
- Sugawara no Michizane
Inspired by the warm, glowing beauty of Japanese gilded screens I have set out on a quest to create similar objects myself while at the art school. My screen draws its inspiration from a poem by a Heian period poet-courtier, Sugawara no Michizane, worshipped as a benevolent God of Learning. Composed during an unplanned trip, the poem presents a brocade of autumn leaves to gods as an offering. My screen thus also turns into an offering to the God of Learning. In this work I wanted to explore the question of understanding and translatability of cultures and thus provided not just Japanese writing, but also English translation of the verse.
The screen looks excellent arranged on a mantelpiece in a zigzag shape or as a table divider in a C shape.
This screen is silver gilt. Silver oxidises with age. It is a natural process and adds sophistication to the piece. The screen should not be exposed to moisture and should not be displayed flat, as it creased stress on the hinges and leads to tearing.

The City and the Moon
2020
In this work each cut-out shape, forming the city and the sky, is a word, Japanese calligraphy kanji in seal script. The City is circular in its' conception and is reaching for the Moon and Stars past the Rains and Clouds. It consists of a mixture of Homes from different periods, standing side by side, just like homes in London. Spaces are filled with Trees and a Road, leading into the beyond. The City is unmoving and serene, sleeping, keeping its inhabitants safe in their homes.

This work was shown at the "City" exhibition, Contemporary Art Room Online Gallery, June 2020

Sakura
2020
This artwork features Japanese writing in kana script, delicately spelling out the word "sakura," which translates to cherry blossom. The focal point of the painting is a single cherry blossom in the later stages of flowering, serving as a poignant reminder of the passing of seasons and the fleeting beauty of nature. This piece is looking to evoke the spirit of spring and the captivating but fleeting beauty of cherry blossoms.
